Height & Matting Considerations

Height & Matting Considerations

The higher a child is off the floor, the greater the risk. Ensure the use of appropriate mats and rig height adjustments where required.

  • Use crash mats under all aerial apparatus
  • If the floor is slippy then add another yoga mat underneath to avoid any slipping.
  • Adjust rig height to suit skill level, heights and age; lower heights reduce fall risk.
  • Mats should extend beyond the rig perimeter for lateral safety.

Practical Examples:

  • Reduce rig height for beginners or children under 8 when introducing inversions or top bar moves and holds. Allow them to safely attempt the skill without fear.

When it comes to safety mats always err on the side of extra coverage, especially for inverted moves.

Supported Inversions

Inversions are high-risk if attempted unsupported. Supporting children correctly ensures safety and builds confidence.

  • Always be on hand to spot children during the first attempts.

  • Break the inversion into smaller steps: eg, approach, grip, tuck, invert, hold, return.
  • Gradually reduce support as competence and confidence grow.

Teaching Tip: Reassure children verbally throughout. Support isn’t just physical, it reduces anxiety and improves learning.
